How to edit Garmin .GPI redlight and speed camera poi files

Garmin is considered one of the leaders in navigation devices. Current automotive models include nüvi (nuvi), StreetPilot and zümo (zumo). You can download preformatted red light & speed camera database files that can easily be added to your compatible Garmin device.

However if you are wanting to customize, edit or update the files directly yourself you need to use the POI loader software available (free) from Garmin's website. The POI Loader software is used to load, customize and edit points of interest in many of the latest models.

Download the Garmin POI Loader directly from Garmin's website.

After Garmin's POI Loader software is installed on your computer, the POI Loader will convert .csv files into Garmin's proprietry .GPI format ready for use in your Garmin navigation device. When using the Garmin POI Loader you should download the .csv files which are formatted to work with this tool.

The pre-formatted .csv files for use with the POI Loader already include the basic formatting that contain longitude, latitude, speed alert information, and optional comments. The comment field we use the camera ID from our database so you are able to trace it later if needs be. The format used is as follows:

<Lon>,<Lat>,["]<Name>[@<Alert Speed>]["],["] [comment]["]

The [] brackets denote optional text.

For the <Name> field we use the following text SpeedCamera, Red Light Camera or SpeedTrap to help highlight the type. If the camera type is a speed camera or SpeedTrap we add the optional @<Alert Speed> variable so you will get the correct proximity alert when approaching only if speeding. In cases where we do not know the correct speed limit the default value of 0 is used which means you will always be alerted.l

The downloadable files themselves also are correctly named with keywords to allow the Garmin proximity alerts to function correctly. The redlight files are named redlight.csv so all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles. Speed Camera and Speed Trap files include the "Speed" keyword.
