Komoto Speed Camera System

Komoto Speed Camera

komoto Speed Camera

The komoto speed camera system is growing in popularity in many countries, currently they are most prevalent in Asia including Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. The komoto speed camera system uses state of the art systems, which include medium resolution cameras, automatic license plate recognition, high-speed infrared strobe for number plate recognition and in some cases radar.

Currently most of these cameras systems are used for highway observation, and not speeding. However, with the addition of radar they can be adapted for speed detection. Additionally, importantly without any hardware updates it only requires a software update to use the camera system for speeding or red light violations. The problem this technology introduces to the driver is that a camera used for traffic observation is indistinguishable from a speed camera.

Tracking speeding violations is based on using the number plate recognition technology to work out the vehicles average speed, given the time it takes to drive between the two known camera positions. This means increasingly the Komoto system can be used to create a speed-controlled zone, or where appropriate, groups of cameras can be linked to create a speed-controlled network.

The premise of this is as vehicles pass between the entry and exit camera points their number plates are digitally recorded, regardless whether the vehicle is speeding or not. Then, using automatic number plate recognition, the images captured on the video of matching number plates are paired up. Because each image carries a time and date stamp, and the distance between the cameras is known, the computer can then calculate the average speed between the cameras.

This system does not require any film, and can be setup on gantries over highways to easily observe up to 4 lanes of traffic at one time allow it to track all vehicles on the highway.

The Komoto systems are growing in popularity because they are able to create speed-controlled zones, not just at the location of a speed camera installation. The Komoto system increases efficiency by being able to utilize existing traffic and highway observation systems, by detecting all vehicles on the road, regardless of lane. And, because the system does not use film does not require constant maintenance which older systems like gatso speed cameras required.
